LEST WE FORGET.
Watching last sSunday’s Remembrance Day parade I caught the most important phrase of all, “LEST WE FORGET”…BECAUSE WE HAVE! .
We have already forgotten what the twentieth century taught us…
FASCISM=CONCENTRATION CAMPS+LEADER WORSHIP=WAR.
Rust belts where unemployment is rife, poverty common and hope is lost.
Where a clearly identifiable minority are blamed for all that is wrong. In the USA it is clearly anyone who is not white, anglo-saxon, protestant and male.
Here in the U.K. it is specifically Moslem immigrants and eastern Europeans.
Poor state education leaves the majority of people ignorant of their country’s past, let alone how to analyse it critically. For example…
How many British citizens, understand that although the UK was the world’s first great trading superpower by the 1870’s it had already been overtaken by the USA and Germany with France, Russia and Belgium coming up fast on the rails? Since then we have fought two world wars, lost an empire with its cheap raw materials and suffered economic decline in the face of south-eastern Asian competition ever since?
The answer is very few, to judge from the blame put upon the arrivals of just the last generation.
Fascist Regimes tend to have the following fourteen characteristics in common. Lest we forget, why not tick the boxes that apply to English society today?
Powerful and continuing Nationalism (Brexit)
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights (Keeness to get shot of the European Court of Justice).
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a unifying cause. (Moslems, Eastern Europeans etc., at least at street level)
Supremacy of the Military (Glamourised, forgetting they are paid to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Some would argue that real heroes are those who don’t shorten but extend and refine the lives of others.)
Sexism (homophobia etc., at street level)
Privately controlled Mass media (85% in the hands of those who unashamedly support the Conservative Party.
Obsession with national security (To prevent terrorism, but what else is recorded?)
Religion and Government inter twined (CofE bishops still have seats in the House of Lords and get trotted out on all official State occasions to add gravitas)
Corporate power is Protected (Offshore secret bank accounts not investigated, just the poor who fiddle social benefits.)
Labour power is Suppressed (The unions rendered ineffective by successive laws).
Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts (Deep suspicion of anyone suspected of being critically literate
Obsession with Crime and Punishment (We lock up more people per head of population than any other country in Europe).
Rampant Cronyism and Corruption (The Establishment Rules).
Fraudulent Elections…(If voting really changed things, would we ever be allowed to do it?)
They Thought They Were Free
By Milton Mayer
"They Thought They Were Free: The Germans 1933-1945",
University of Chicago Press. Reissued in paperback, April, 1981.
There will be a charismatic Leader who will have assumed heroic proportions boosted by media and a totally compliant education system designed to dissuade people from asking questions, much less looking for answers.
They will have free rein to establish a regime based on points 1-14.
However, there will remain the problem of those “enemies within”, the people different from “us” and the elites who will seize on every opportunity to oppose the Leader’s wise polices on the grounds that they are not based on wisdom, charity and respect for their fellow man.
They must be isolated to prevent their poison from infecting the rest of society. Simply lock them away until they either recant or die.
All opposition must be quashed.
Unfortunately there will be a crisis approaching. There has been a massive over-production of the munitions that was used to kick-start the economic recovery. The armed forces are so vastly over-equipped and with foreign powers holding the regime with such abhorrence that they refuse to buy surplus weaponry, demand is falling and unemployment rising.
The answer? Use existing stocks of armaments to create the need for replacements, and there is only one way to do that….War and …….Defeat.!
SO HOW MUCH HAVE WE FORGOTTEN AND HOW MUCH SHOULD WE REMEMBER BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE?
