By 1881 this stretch of the River Yare had been transformed. Patterson* 1911..."It hummed with machinery, shipwright's hammers, rope walks buzzing, masts and blockmakers, butchers' and bakers' carts" etc. In the same period, the population of Gorleston rose by 129.6% while that of Norfolk and Suffolk as a whole by only 0.5%. WHY?
