Snap or Photograph?
For many, a photographer like any artist exists to make pretty things. For the rest of us, their function is to challenge our prejudices and to ask questions, to encourage us to see things how they really are and not how we are told how they ought to be and to ask how do we actually see things in the first place.
Some photographers have been better at doing this than others. I have three personal favourites... Dorothea Lange, Philip Jones Griffiths, David Hockney and Arno Rafael Minkkinen who have set my personal photographic agenda.
Alternatively there is the reaction of a friend on my telling him I was about to embark on a three-year City and Guilds photography course..
